The Power Of Music
A therapeutic method tailored to stimulate cognitive function through sensory engagement, social interaction, and the universal language of music.
Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence for people living with mild to moderate dementia. CST is an evidence-based approach that uses multimedia activities — including music, images, conversation and reminiscence — to stimulate cognition (memory and thinking), while also promoting social interaction, confidence and overall wellbeing.
One of the most powerful tools within CST is music. Musical memory is often remarkably preserved in dementia (even in later stages) because musical, emotional and procedural memories are stored across multiple areas of the brain, rather than in the specific regions most affected early in conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. Familiar songs can therefore trigger deep autobiographical memories, reduce agitation, and improve mood by engaging emotional systems that often remain intact.
Why Musical Memory Often Lasts 🎵
Procedural Memory: Music — particularly rhythm and well-known songs — engages procedural memory (automatic skills and habits), which is often preserved longer than episodic memory (recalling specific events).
Brain Resilience: Listening to music activates widespread brain networks including the motor cortex, anterior cingulate gyrus, and emotional centres — areas that are typically among the last to be affected by dementia.
Emotional Connection: Songs are often strongly linked to meaningful life experiences. Hearing a familiar piece of music can reconnect a person with memories, feelings, and aspects of their identity.
Benefits of Music in Dementia Care 🌟
Improved Mood and Behaviour: Listening to or singing along with familiar music can help reduce agitation, anxiety and low mood.
Enhanced Communication: Music can enable people who struggle with speech to express emotion, smile, move, or sing — helping maintain connection with others.
Cognitive Stimulation: Music can temporarily enhance attention, verbal fluency and memory recall.
Using Music Effectively 🎶
Personalised Playlists: Creating playlists of meaningful music from a person’s teenage years and early adulthood can be especially powerful.
Active Participation: Encouraging singing, clapping, dancing or simple instruments can deepen engagement compared with passive listening.
Routine Use: Incorporating music into daily care routines can reduce stress, support cooperation and create a calmer, more positive environment.
CST Song Of The Day
Songs that evoke memories and emotions & enhance wellbeing
The CST Song of the Day initiative focuses on the profound ability of music to bridge the gaps in memory and emotion. By using familiar melodies, we help people living with dementia tap into preserved musical memories, fostering moments of genuine joy and connection that significantly enhance cognitive stimulation and overall emotional health.
