Introduction – Antoni Gaudí, Barcelona & the Sagrada Família (100 Years On)

In 2026, Barcelona marks 100 years since the death of visionary architect Antoni Gaudí, whose extraordinary imagination transformed the city's skyline forever. His unfinished masterpiece, the Sagrada Família, has become one of the most recognisable churches in the world and continues to inspire millions of visitors each year.

To commemorate the centenary, celebrations included the completion of the spectacular Tower of Jesus Christ, bringing the basilica closer than ever to Gaudí's original vision. The occasion was marked by a special visit from Pope Leo XIV, who blessed the new tower and celebrated Mass in one of the most significant religious and cultural events in the city's recent history.

The festivities also embraced modern technology. Instead of a traditional fireworks display, hundreds of synchronised drones illuminated the night sky, creating breathtaking images including Gaudí's face and symbols inspired by his work. The drone show reflected the architect's love of innovation while reducing noise and smoke compared with conventional fireworks. However, a spectacular fireworks show followed.

The Sagrada Família regularly appears on lists of the world's most beautiful churches, alongside landmarks such as St Peter's Basilica, Notre-Dame, St Mark's Basilica, Westminster Abbey, York Minster, St Paul's Cathedral and Florence Cathedral. Its soaring towers, colourful stained glass and intricate stone carvings make it unlike any other place of worship on Earth.

To round off today's session, enjoy our CST Song of the Day – "Barcelona" by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé. Released in 1987, the song became closely associated with the city and the 1992 Olympic Games, blending rock and opera in a powerful celebration of Barcelona's spirit and ambition. It's the perfect musical tribute to Gaudí's enduring legacy and one of Europe's most remarkable cities.
