🦁 International Lion Day – 10 August

Today we’re celebrating International Lion Day – a day dedicated to one of the world’s most magnificent and instantly recognisable animals.

We’ll begin with some facts about International Lion Day before asking why lions have become known as the “King of the Jungle” – even though most wild lions don’t actually live in jungles!

We’ll then meet The Big Five and discover how the lion earned its place alongside some of Africa’s other most famous animals.

There’s plenty of opportunity to talk and reminisce, including memories of seeing lions at the zoo, safari parks or on television, before we explore just how much the lion has left its mark on our world – from coats of arms, flags and pub signs to sport, chocolate, celebrations and royalty.

We’ll also discover the remarkable story of the Harrods lion, before putting our memories to the test with a Name the Famous Lions challenge featuring some familiar faces from television, films, advertising and childhood.

And, of course, there’ll be music! Our CST Songs of the Day include three very different songs with a lion connection:
