LOVE PARKS WEEK - Celebrating the Green Spaces We Treasure

Love Parks Week is an annual celebration of the parks and green spaces that enrich our lives. Whether it's a village green, a local recreation ground or a famous city park, parks are places to relax, exercise, meet friends, enjoy nature and make lasting memories.

For many people, parks have been the backdrop to childhood games, family picnics, Sunday walks, brass band concerts and community celebrations. They remain important places that support both our physical health and emotional wellbeing.

This week, we'll celebrate the beauty of parks through memories, quizzes, music and practical activities.

ITCHYCOO PARK

Small Faces (1967)

One of the defining songs of the Summer of Love, Itchycoo ParkĀ reached No. 3 in the UK charts. Its distinctive flanging sound effect was groundbreaking and helped make it one of the band's best-known recordings.

The song celebrates escaping everyday life to enjoy the freedom and happiness of a favourite park.

Memory Prompt

Did you have a favourite park where you met friends or simply relaxed?

MACARTHUR PARK

Richard Harris (1968)

Written by Jimmy Webb, MacArthur ParkĀ became famous for its dramatic orchestral arrangement and memorable lyrics. Although the meaning of the song has long been debated, it remains one of the most recognisable recordings of the late 1960s.

The title refers to MacArthur Park in Los Angeles.

Memory Prompt

Have you ever visited a famous park while on holiday?

PERFECT DAY

Lou Reed (1972)

Lou Reed's gentle ballad describes the simple pleasure of spending a peaceful day in the park with someone special. Over the years it has become one of his best-loved songs and has featured in many films and television programmes.

Its message reminds us that some of life's happiest moments come from ordinary days shared with others.

Memory Prompt

What made a day in the park "perfect" for you?

PRACTICAL ACTIVITY

PRESS A FLOWER OR LEAF

Create a lasting reminder of Love Parks Week.

Collect a fallen flower, leaf or fern (never pick protected plants). Place it carefully between two sheets of absorbent paper inside a heavy book and leave it for one to two weeks. Once dry, mount it onto card to make a bookmark, greetings card or framed keepsake.

While you work, chat about:

• Favourite flowers and trees.

• Family picnics and summer outings.

• Parks you loved to visit.

• Gardens you have grown.

Take Home Idea:Ā Start a small nature scrapbook by adding pressed flowers and writing where each one was found.

PRACTICAL ACTIVITY

PAINT A FLOWER

Choose a fresh flower or small bunch of flowers picked from the garden or park (or use flowers provided).

There is no right or wrong way to paint them. Don't worry about creating a perfect picture - simply use the colours, shapes and brushstrokes that capture what you see and feel.

Whether your flower is realistic or imaginative, every painting will be unique.

While you paint, chat about:

• Favourite flowers and gardens.

• Flowers that grew in your childhood garden.

• Picking wildflowers on country walks.

• Wedding bouquets and special occasions.

• The scent of roses, lavender or honeysuckle.

Display everyone's artwork together to create a colourful "Love Parks Week Flower Gallery".

& if members wish, send them in to 'Simon's Creative Art Gallery' to showcase them via simondementia@gmail.com
