Celebrate National Burger Day on 27 August with a tasty selection of dementia-friendly Cognitive Stimulation Therapy activities, combining food nostalgia, conversation, quizzes, word challenges, music and a practical activity.
Begin with some fascinating facts about the history of the burger, before inviting everyone to share their memories and preferences with Let’s Talk Burgers. What makes the perfect burger? Beef, chicken, fish or vegetarian? Cheese or no cheese? What toppings and sauces would you choose - and what would you definitely leave off?
Test visual recognition with Name the Fast-Food Outlet from Its Logo, featuring familiar favourites such as McDonald’s, KFC, Wimpy, Burger King and Greggs. Discover the connection between Wimpy and the hamburger-loving character from Popeye, and see how many different types of burger everyone can recognise.
The Burger Toppings, Sides and Drinks Word Challenge encourages participants to name as many things as possible that might be served with or added to a burger—from cheese, onions, lettuce and dill pickles to French fries, tomato ketchup, American mustard, milkshakes and cola.
There is also an opportunity to remember Linda McCartney, whose pioneering vegetarian food range helped make meat-free burgers and meals more widely available in Britain.
Add some musical and advertising nostalgia by singing along with classic television commercials, including the famous Coca-Cola song “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” and Pepsi’s unforgettable “Lipsmackin’ Thirstquenchin’…”word challenge.
Finish the session by creating a build-your-own burger bar. Offer a choice of burgers, buns, cheese, salad, pickles, sauces and sides, allowing everyone to assemble and enjoy their own perfect burger.
National Burger Day provides plenty of opportunities to stimulate memory, conversation, language, choice, creativity and the senses - with something delicious to enjoy at the end!
