Welcome to today's National Camera Day activities!

Today we're celebrating one of the world's greatest inventions – the camera. Photographs allow us to capture precious moments, preserve family memories and record important events for future generations. A single picture can often tell a story that words cannot.

We'll begin by discovering some fascinating facts about National Camera Day before taking a look at the history of photography, including the world's very first photograph and the first photograph ever to include a person.

We'll then have a chance to talk about our own photographic memories. Do you remember your first camera? Did you enjoy taking family photos, going on holiday with a camera around your neck, or having your picture taken at school, weddings or special celebrations?

Our creative activity encourages everyone to become a photographer. If possible, take two photographs with a smartphone or camera: one of a beautiful view or landscape, then, without moving very far, take a close-up photograph of something interesting nearby. Afterwards, think about what caught your eye and how the two pictures tell different stories about the same place.
