Today we're celebrating two fun summer-themed occasions that both fall on 5th JulyNational Fish & Chips Day and International Bikini Day.

National Fish & Chips Day celebrates one of Britain's best-loved traditional meals. For well over 150 years, fish and chips have been a favourite seaside treat, bringing back happy memories of family holidays, walks along the promenade, and enjoying a meal wrapped in paper while watching the waves.

International Bikini Day marks the anniversary of the unveiling of the modern bikini in 1946. Whether we prefer bikinis, swimsuits, or simply sitting in the shade with an ice cream, it reminds us of sunshine, holidays, beaches and all the fun of the British seaside.

Today we'll be taking a nostalgic trip to the coast. We'll begin by guessing how much a takeaway fish and chips from Rick Stein's famous Padstow fish and chip shop might cost today. Then we'll see how many traditional seaside foods and drinks we can name, followed by other sights and attractions you might find at the seaside besides food.

After that we'll think about the clothes, footwear and fashions people wear on the beach and promenade, from flip-flops and swimsuits to sun hats and sunglasses, before sharing our own favourite seaside memories and holidays.

There's also a practical creative activity. Using a seaside-themed postcard (or making one), everyone can write a traditional "Wish You Were Here!" message to a friend or loved one, imagining they're writing from their favourite holiday destination. It's a lovely way to spark memories of special holidays, favourite resorts, and the people we enjoyed them with.

We'll finish with three wonderfully summery CST Songs of the Day:

  • The Sun Has Got His Hat On

  • Oh! I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside

  • Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

So, grab your bucket and spade, imagine the smell of fish and chips and salty sea air, and let's head to the seaside for a fun-filled trip down memory lane!

The answer to how much fish and chips costs at Rick Stein's takeaway restaurant in Padstow is £15.95
