Celebrate National Waffle Day on 24 August with this tasty collection of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy activities, combining food, flags, famous faces, wordplay, music and plenty of nostalgic conversation.

We begin with some fascinating Facts About Waffles, exploring their history, the familiar grid pattern and the many different varieties enjoyed around the world. Our Let’s Talk a Load of Old Waffle discussion slide then encourages members to share memories of favourite breakfasts, teatime treats, toppings and foods from childhood.

Travel around the world with our Flags and Griddle Bakes Challenge. Can members match each country to its traditional speciality, including Welsh cakes from Wales, crĂŞpes from France, crumpets from England and chapatis from India?

Belgium is particularly famous for its waffles, so our Belgian Quiz asks members to name famous people, characters, foods, inventions and landmarks associated with the country. Look out for Brussels, Belgian chocolate, Brussels sprouts, Hercule Poirot, Tintin, Audrey Hepburn, Jean-Claude Van Damme, the Smurfs, Waterloo, René Magritte, the saxophone, Rubens, Belgian lace, beer and French fries.

There is plenty of wordplay too. In our Find the Homonym picture challenges, members must identify one word with two different meanings—such as a calendar date and a fruit date, or a sea wave and a friendly wave of the hand. There are 27 picture puzzles to solve before checking the complete answers slide.

Members can also try to make as many words as possible from the letters in “National Waffle Day”, using each of the supplied letters only as often as it appears.

Potato waffles provide another helping of food nostalgia. Remember the famous advertising slogan, “Birds Eye Potato Waffles—they’re waffly versatile!”? Our classic frozen-food montage challenges members to recognise old favourites such as Arctic Roll, Viennetta, fish fingers, crispy pancakes, oven chips, potato smiles, turkey twizzlers and chicken Kiev.

Music lovers can enjoy the connections too. “Rabbit” by Chas & Dave celebrates another meaning of “waffle”—talking on and on—while “Waterloo” by ABBA leads us back to Belgium and the famous battle that gave the song its title.

There is no pressure to remember every answer. The activities are designed to stimulate observation, language, memory and conversation while sharing a few laughs—and perhaps inspiring everyone to enjoy a waffle or two!
