'National Wildlife Day' 🦊 4 September

Today we’re celebrating National Wildlife Day with a collection of CST activities inspired by the wonderful wildlife found across the British Isles - from the animals in our gardens and countryside to the creatures living around our coasts and seas.

We’ll begin with some fascinating Facts About National Wildlife Day, before enjoying a Let’s Talk Wildlifediscussion. Which wild animals did you see when you were growing up? Did you feed the birds, visit the seaside, go on country walks or have a favourite animal you always hoped to spot?

Then it’s time to put our memories and powers of recognition to work. Our wildlife picture challenges ask you to name British land animals, followed by familiar birds and insects, and then some of the extraordinary sea creatures found around the British coast. How many can you recognise before the answers are revealed?

British wildlife has also provided inspiration for some wonderful television programmes and films. See how many wildlife-related TV shows and movies you remember, including old favourites that may bring back memories of family viewing and childhood television.

We’ll also celebrate some of the familiar faces who brought the natural world into our homes. Can you name the British wildlife television presenters from their photographs and remember the programmes they appeared in?

There’s another memory challenge with a musical twist. We have 20 animal songs represented by picture clues. Can you work out the song title from the animal or scene before the answer is revealed?

For our CST Songs of the Day, rather than choosing the music for you, we’re handing the choice over to the group. Look through our list of 20 animal-themed songs and ask members to choose one or two favourites to listen to together. Which songs bring back the strongest memories - and which ones have everyone singing along?

And for something practical, have a go at making a simple bird feeder to take home or hang outside, giving your local wildlife a little treat too.
