'World Aviation Day' ✈️ 19 August
Welcome to my special World Aviation Day CST Activities, celebrating the remarkable story of flight - from the earliest flying machines to supersonic aircraft, helicopters and the Space Shuttle.
We’ll begin by completing some familiar aviation sayings and idioms, before taking a fascinating journey through the history of aviation and the people whose courage and imagination helped us conquer the skies.
Our first memory challenge asks you to name some famous aviators, and we’ll discover the extraordinary stories of the Zeppelin and Howard Hughes’s enormous Spruce Goose.
Next, test your knowledge in our Famous Aircraft Quiz, featuring some of the best-known aeroplanes in aviation history. We’ll also explore factoids about the Enola Gay, the Lockerbie disaster and the supersonic wonder of Concorde.
Fiction takes to the skies too, with a memory challenge featuring some much-loved fictional aviators from films, television, books and cartoons.
We’ll then discover the stories behind Air Force One and Shepherd One, marvel at the incredible Space Shuttle and, of course, we haven’t forgotten helicopters - including perhaps the most famous of them all, the Sea King.
Our final picture challenge asks you to name eight famous aviation movies from the photographs and their release years.
Music plays an important part in today’s activities, with six wonderfully appropriate CST songs:

Finally, it’s time to become aircraft designers ourselves! Make your own paper aeroplanes, decorate them and then see how well they fly in our friendly paper-aeroplane races.
