World Lizard Day – CST Activities
World Lizard Day is celebrated on 14 August and provides a wonderfully colourful theme for reminiscence, conversation, learning and creativity.
Lizards have lived on Earth for millions of years and come in an extraordinary variety of shapes, sizes and colours - from tiny geckos and colour-changing chameleons to iguanas and enormous Komodo dragons. During this session, we will discover what makes a lizard a lizard, explore how they use their tongues to detect scents and compare them with snakes, crocodiles, turtles and amphibians.
We will journey back through time to look at the evolution of reptiles, the age of the dinosaurs and the asteroid that struck present-day Mexico 66 million years ago. We will also follow Charles Darwin aboard HMS Beagle to the Galápagos Islands, where his observations of marine iguanas, giant tortoises and other wildlife contributed to his ideas about evolution by natural selection.
Lizards and reptiles have also influenced stories, legends and popular culture. We will explore dragons in Chinese, European and Mesoamerican mythology before testing our memories by naming famous dinosaurs and reptile-related movies.
There will be plenty of opportunities for discussion, including encounters with lizards at home or abroad and which animal we would choose as a pet. Our practical activity is to create a colourful lizard or dragon collage.
Music is provided by Culture Club, Elton John, Peter, Paul and Mary and Adele, giving us four memorable CST Songs of the Day to enjoy together.
