'Barbershop Music Appreciation Day' 💈 13 July

Today we're celebrating Barbershop Music Appreciation Day with a trip back to a time when a visit to the barber or hairdresser was much more than just getting a haircut. It was a chance to catch up on the local gossip, read the comics or magazines while waiting your turn, and enjoy the familiar smells of shaving soap, Brylcreem, hairspray and talcum powder.

We'll begin by discovering a few fascinating facts about the history of barbershop harmony before sharing our own memories of visits to the barber or hairdresser. We'll then put our memories to the test by seeing how many different hairstyles we can remember and identifying famous people by their iconic hairstyles.

Our musical journey features four timeless favourites. We'll enjoy the classic barbershop anthem Sweet Adeline, followed by the sentimental favourite Let Me Call You Sweetheart. We'll then hear the ever-popular Alexander's Ragtime Band, before finishing with the wonderful Shine On, Harvest Moon - a song that became a staple of barbershop quartets and is memorably and hilariously performed by Oliver Hardy, whose perfect comic timing and warm singing voice make it a real audience favourite.
