🚲 Bicycle Day – April 19

Bicycle Day is a lovely opportunity to celebrate one of the simplest and most joyful inventions - the bicycle. For many people, bikes bring back powerful memories of childhood freedom, learning to ride without stabilisers, family outings, or cycling to school and work. It’s a great theme for Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) because it naturally sparks reminiscence, conversation, and storytelling.

You might invite group members to share:

  • Their first bicycle (colour, style, who taught them)

  • Favourite cycling trips or holidays

  • Memories of paper rounds, courting, or cycling clubs

  • Changes in bikes over the years (from penny farthings to helmets to e-bikes)

You can also incorporate gentle movement (pedalling motions), sounds (bike bells), or visual prompts (photos of classic bicycles) to create a multi-sensory session.

🎵 CST Songs of the Day

🚲 Daisy Bell – Nat King Cole

Often known by the line “A bicycle built for two,” this charming, instantly recognisable song is perfect for Bicycle Day. It’s light-hearted, easy to sing along to, and strongly linked to vintage imagery of tandem bikes and old-fashioned romance. It can prompt discussion about courting, dating, and how people got around in earlier times.

🌧️ Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head – B. J. Thomas

This upbeat classic (famously featuring a carefree bicycle scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) brings a positive, optimistic mood. It’s ideal for encouraging singing, gentle swaying, and conversation about films, weather, and keeping cheerful despite life’s ups and downs.

💡 CST Activity IdeaYou could finish the session with a simple activity like:

  • “Design Your Dream Bicycle” (drawing or collage)

  • Or a “Bicycle Memories Circle” where each person shares a short story

These songs and themes work beautifully together to create a session that is nostalgic, uplifting, and full of connection 🚲

🚴 Name These Bicycles Activity

This fun and engaging activity invites participants to look at a range of different bicycles and try to name each one. From classic designs like the penny farthing to modern e-bikes, the images are chosen to spark recognition, curiosity, and conversation.

It’s a great way to encourage reminiscence, as many people will have personal memories of cycling - learning to ride as a child, family outings, or using a bike for work or leisure. The variety of bicycles also helps stimulate thinking and discussion, as some may be familiar while others are more unusual.

The activity can be done individually or as a group, with plenty of opportunities to chat along the way:

  • Have you ever ridden one of these bikes?

  • Which type did you have or would you have liked?

  • Where did you used to go cycling?

🚵 Name the Famous Bicyclists

This activity invites participants to look at a series of images and try to recognise and name the famous cyclists and cycling personalities shown. The pictures include well-known sporting figures, as well as a few fun and unexpected faces, helping to keep the activity light-hearted and engaging.

It’s a great way to stimulate memory, spark conversation, and encourage observation skills. Some faces may be instantly recognisable, while others might need a few clues - making it ideal for group discussion and teamwork.

You can support the activity with gentle prompts such as:

  • What sport are they associated with?

  • Do you remember watching them compete?

  • What do you know about their achievements?

There’s also plenty of opportunity to branch out into wider reminiscence:

  • Have you ever followed cycling events like the Olympics or Tour de France?

  • Did you enjoy riding a bike when you were younger?

  • Do you have a favourite sports personality?

With a mix of recognition, discussion, and a touch of humour, this activity supports cognitive stimulation while keeping the session relaxed, social, and enjoyable.
