Welcome to Simon's CST Activities and a celebration of World Listening Day.
We spend our whole lives surrounded by sound, yet we rarely stop to appreciate just how important listening really is. A familiar voice, birds singing in the garden, waves breaking on the beach, a church bell, the whistle of a steam train or the opening notes of a favourite song can all transport us instantly back to another time and place.
Our hearing is closely linked with memory and emotion. Many sounds become part of the story of our lives, reminding us of childhood, family, school, work, holidays and happy occasions. For people living with dementia, these long-term memories are often remarkably well preserved, making sound and music wonderful ways of stimulating conversation, reminiscence and enjoyment.
Today's activities will challenge your ears as well as your memory. Together we'll recognise familiar sounds, talk about the noises that have disappeared from everyday life, share our favourite sounds from the past and discover just how many everyday noises we can identify.
As always, there are no right or wrong answers. The aim is to listen, think, talk, laugh and enjoy spending time together. You may remember sounds that others have forgotten, and someone else's memories may spark your own.
We'll finish with two beautiful Simon & Garfunkel classics—"The Sounds of Silence" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water"—songs that remind us of the comfort, friendship and emotion that silence, music and listening can bring.
So, sit back, open your ears, let your memories do the talking... and enjoy today's celebration of World Listening Day.
