WORLD SUN DAY – May 3 ☀️

World Sun Day celebrates the power and importance of the Sun in our everyday lives. The Sun has shone on Earth for over 4.5 billion years, providing the light and warmth needed for life to exist.

It helps plants grow, supports the food we eat, and gives us daylight to guide our daily routines. Sunshine can also boost our mood and help our bodies produce vitamin D, which is important for healthy bones.

Today is also a chance to think about how we use the Sun’s energy. Solar power is a clean, renewable source of energy that can help protect our planet for future generations.

Take a moment today to enjoy the sunshine, feel its warmth, and think about all the ways it supports life on Earth.

CST SONG OF THE DAY – “Here Comes The Sun” – The Beatles ☀️

Released in 1969 on the album Abbey Road, “Here Comes The Sun” was written by George Harrison. It quickly became one of the most loved songs by The Beatles, known for its uplifting melody and message of hope.

The song was written on a sunny day after a long, cold winter - capturing the feeling of relief and happiness when brighter days finally arrive. Its gentle guitar and positive lyrics make it instantly recognisable and easy to sing along to.

For many people, the song brings back memories of the late 1960s, family moments, and the feeling of spring and new beginnings.

🧠 CST Activity Ideas:

• What does sunshine mean to you?

• Favourite sunny day memories

• Name other songs about the sun

• Word game: words beginning with “S” (Sun, Sky, Summer…)

RENEWABLE ENERGY ♻️☀️

Renewable energy comes from natural sources that will not run out, such as sunlight, wind, and water. Unlike fossil fuels like coal and oil, these energy sources are cleaner and help reduce pollution.

Solar panels use the Sun’s energy to create electricity, wind turbines turn moving air into power, and flowing water can generate energy through hydroelectric systems. These methods help protect the environment and support a healthier planet.

Using renewable energy is becoming more common around the world as people look for ways to reduce climate change and make better use of natural resources.

🧠 CST Discussion Prompts:

• Have you seen solar panels or wind turbines? Where?

• What was energy like when you were younger?

• Can you think of everyday things that use electricity?

• Would you consider using solar power at home?

FACTS ABOUT THE SUN ☀️

The Sun is a huge ball of hot gas at the centre of our solar system. It is about 150 million kilometres (93 million miles) away from Earth, yet its light reaches us in just over 8 minutes.

The Sun is incredibly powerful - so big that over one million Earths could fit inside it. It produces light and heat through a natural process called Nuclear Fusion, releasing vast amounts of energy every second.

Even though it looks small in the sky, the Sun is essential for life on Earth. It controls our climate, drives weather patterns, and supports all living things.

Scientists believe the Sun is about 4.6 billion years old and will continue shining for billions more years.

🧠 CST Discussion Prompts:

• Did any of these facts surprise you?

• How long do you think sunlight takes to reach Earth?

• What would life be like without the Sun?

• Can you name other objects in our solar system?

WHAT THE SUN GIVES US ☀️

The Sun provides us with light and warmth, making life on Earth possible. It helps set our daily routines - day and night - and gives us the seasons throughout the year.

Sunlight allows plants to grow through a process called Photosynthesis. These plants give us food to eat and produce oxygen for us to breathe.

The Sun also helps our bodies make vitamin D, which is important for strong bones and overall health. Sunshine can lift our mood, helping us feel more positive and energised.

From growing our food to brightening our days, the Sun plays a vital role in supporting life and wellbeing.

🧠 CST Discussion Prompts:

• What do you enjoy doing on a sunny day?

• How does sunshine make you feel?

• What foods come from plants that need the Sun?

• Favourite summer memories
