'World Coconut Day' 🥥 2 September

Today we’re celebrating World Coconut Day with a tropical collection of conversation, reminiscence, quizzes, fascinating facts, music and practical activities — all inspired by the remarkably versatile coconut.

We’ll begin with some Facts About World Coconut Day, discovering where coconuts grow and why the coconut palm is sometimes called the “Tree of Life.” Our Let’s Talk Coconuts discussion will encourage memories of tasting fresh coconut, trying to open one, enjoying coconut sweets and perhaps visiting tropical places.

Then it’s time for our memory challenges. How many coconut products can we name? Look out for familiar favourites including Bounty bars, coconut ice, macaroons, snowballs, coconut cake, coconut milk, coconut water and coconut oil. There are also name the tropical fruits and nuts challenges. We’ll also remember the traditional coconut shy and talk about visits to fairs and seaside amusement parks.

Our movie challenge asks us to recognise films with memorable coconut or tropical-island associations, including Swiss Family Robinson, The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe and, of course, the famous coconut-shell horse sounds from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

We’ll discover the story of the piña colada, Puerto Rico’s famous combination of pineapple and coconut, and perhaps hold our own coconut taste test. Can we describe its smell, flavour and texture?

Our CST Songs of the Day include the wonderfully nostalgic “I’ve Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" and Rupert Holmes’s “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)”.

So, crack open a coconut, imagine the rustling palms and enjoy a day filled with memories, conversation, laughter, music and tropical fun!
